Esmeraldas en el Ecuador, una provincia ausente

Abstract
La historiografía ecuatoriana apenas ha prestado atención a los avatares ocurridos en un espacio geográfi-co que, a pesar de su condición marginal, fue determinante para el triunfo del proyecto liberal triunfante en el Ecuador a fines del siglo XIX. El convencimiento de que se trata de una situación que es preciso revertir inspira el análisis historiográfico que se aborda en el artículo y fundamenta la necesidad de acometer una tarea que comporta no sólo la identificación y la preservación de las fuentes documentales, sino también la puesta en marcha de planes de formación dirigidos a las personas que estén llamadas a re-escribir el pasa-do histórico de Esmeraldas, a través de un examen en profundidad de su pasado que ponga de manifiesto tanto la incuria de los gobernantes de Quito como las responsabilidades de los esmeraldeños, habituados a atribuir a ‘otros’ las responsabilidades de los propios fracasos.
