The Journal

Ecos de la Academia is a scientific journal of the Faculty of Education, Science and Technology at Universidad Técnica del Norte, based in Ibarra, Imbabura, Ecuador. The journal was founded on January 2, 2014, and published its first issue on June 30, 2015.

Its purpose is to publish original contributions that strengthen scientific knowledge in the field of education, with particular attention to pedagogical, cultural, communicational, technological, and social issues related to educational processes.

Aims and Scope

Ecos de la Academia is a scientific journal in the field of education and its interdisciplinary intersections, aimed at understanding and transforming educational processes. Contributions addressing pedagogy, didactics, educational innovation, educational psychology, curriculum, and assessment in primary, secondary, and higher education are particularly welcome.

The journal has the following specific objectives:

  • To disseminate research findings that provide empirical evidence, theoretical developments, or methodological proposals relevant to the study of education.
  • To increase the visibility of educational innovations and scientifically grounded experiences that contribute to the development of teaching and learning practices, policies, and processes.
  • To promote critical analysis and academic discussion of contemporary educational issues in local, national, and international contexts.
  • To foster interdisciplinary dialogue between education and related fields such as communication, psychology, technology, art, culture, physical activity, and sport.
  • To strengthen the open circulation of knowledge by promoting access to, use of, and dissemination of scientific production among researchers, teachers, undergraduate and graduate students, education administrators, and other stakeholders involved in education.
  • To promote internationalization and diversity in scholarly communication by welcoming contributions from different geographical, institutional, and cultural contexts.

The journal is published and funded by Universidad Técnica del Norte, Ibarra, Ecuador, which supports its Diamond Open Access model with no article processing charges (APCs).

Manuscripts whose primary subject belongs to other disciplines and that do not establish a substantive, explicit, and methodologically grounded relationship with education or educational processes are outside the scope of the journal. The mere use of students, teachers, or educational institutions as a study population is not, by itself, sufficient to establish thematic relevance.

Academic Audience

The journal is intended for researchers, teachers, undergraduate and graduate students, education administrators, peer reviewers, scholarly editors, and professionals interested in the study of educational processes in national and international contexts.

Document Types

Ecos de la Academia publishes research articles, review articles, case reports, and short communications. Each document type must comply with the structural, length, methodological rigor, and documentation requirements established in the Author Guidelines.

Publication Languages

Ecos de la Academia accepts submissions in Spanish, English, Kichwa, and Portuguese. All manuscripts must include the title, abstract, and keywords in both Spanish and English. When the main language of the manuscript is Kichwa or Portuguese, these elements must also be provided in the main language of the manuscript.

Open Access, Fees, and Funding

Ecos de la Academia is a Diamond Open Access journal. Its contents are freely and immediately available without financial barriers to reading, downloading, or consultation.

The journal charges no submission, evaluation, editorial processing, editing, layout, or publication fees. The journal is funded by Universidad Técnica del Norte, an autonomous public institution that supports its non-profit editorial activities.

Copyright and License

Authors retain copyright in their works. Upon acceptance for publication, they grant Editorial UTN, through Ecos de la Academia, a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to publish, distribute, preserve, index, and disseminate the work in any format or medium.

Unless otherwise indicated, content published by the journal is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This license permits users to copy, redistribute, remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, including commercial purposes, provided that appropriate credit is given, a link to the license is provided, and any changes made are indicated.

No legal terms or technological measures may be applied that restrict the uses permitted by the license. The license does not affect other applicable rights, including moral rights, privacy rights, image rights, data protection rights, or other third-party rights.

International Statements and Good Editorial Practices

Ecos de la Academia develops its editorial policies with reference to international statements, initiatives, principles, and frameworks related to research integrity, open access, publication ethics, open citations, licensing, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

Editorial Ethics and Peer Review

The journal applies a rigorous, transparent, and ethically responsible editorial process. All manuscripts undergo an initial editorial assessment to verify thematic relevance, formal compliance, originality, metadata completeness, ethical declarations, and adherence to the journal's policies.

Manuscripts that pass the initial assessment are sent to two specialist reviewers under a double-blind peer-review model. At least one reviewer will be external to Universidad Técnica del Norte. Editorial decisions are based on academic quality, originality, relevance, methodological consistency, currency of the literature, and the manuscript's contribution to the field of education.

The journal may use institutional text-similarity checking tools to support originality assessment. Plagiarism, self-plagiarism, fabrication or falsification of data, citation manipulation, inappropriate authorship, undisclosed conflicts of interest, undeclared substantial use of artificial intelligence, or any use of such tools that violates the journal's transparency and integrity policies may result in editorial rejection or appropriate post-publication measures.

Digital Preservation

Ecos de la Academia maintains digital preservation mechanisms through LOCKSS and CLOCKSS, in addition to institutional preservation through the Digital Repository of Universidad Técnica del Norte. These mechanisms contribute to the long-term storage, integrity, traceability, and accessibility of scholarly content.

In addition, records exist of historical preservation of journal content through the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN). The continuity of new deposits in this network is subject to the installation, configuration, and operational verification of the corresponding service in OJS.

Frequency and Publication Model

Ecos de la Academia is published biannually, with two issues per year: January-June and July-December. The journal accepts submissions throughout the year and follows a continuous publication model. Approved articles are published online once the editorial process has been completed, assigned a DOI, and progressively incorporated into the corresponding issue.

Issues are formally closed on June 30 and December 30 each year.
