Basic Taekwondo Kicking Technique and Coordinative Abilities in Pre-Service Physical Education Teachers

Abstract
In the preparation of pre-service Physical Education teachers, the development of coordinative abilities is not always addressed in sufficient depth, potentially limiting a comprehensive education. In this context, taekwondo, through its basic kicking techniques, is a little-explored educational alternative. Therefore, this research aimed to determine the relationship between perceptions of technical mastery of basic taekwondo kicks and self-perceptions of coordination skills among students in the Physical Education program. The study was quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive-correlational in scope. The population consisted of 128 students from the Dual Subject of Taekwondo in the Physical Activity and Sports Pedagogy program, and a final sample of 96 students was selected through non-probabilistic intentional sampling, with a predominance of males (n=72) and ages ranging from 21 to 24 years. The instrument was a 52-item questionnaire with high internal consistency (α = 0.983) as determined in the pilot test. The main results evidence that students perceive an intermediate technical level in kick execution, while their coordinative abilities are favorably perceived, with variations in balance, force regulation, and rhythmic coordination. Additionally, the Spearman correlation analysis revealed a highly significant correlation between both variables (r = 0.774; p < 0.001). It is concluded that, according to the students’ subjective assessment, taekwondo stands out as a valuable component for strengthening the comprehensive motor training of future professionals in the field.
